Immunity Boost for Winter season

Winter with its cold weather is sometimes viewed as a challenging season, when viruses and flu spread easily.  While, according to Ayurveda, winter is on the contrary considered the optimal season to improve health, restore, rejuvenate and even increase immunity.  From holistic perspective, immunity is closely linked with digestion.  Very simply said, healthy digestion promotes strong immunity, sense of energy and general well-being.  And that is why are foods and spices so essential in Ayurvedic medicine and are considered to be either medicine or poison. 

 

Spices are not only amazing flavor enhancers, they are also therapeutic agents.  They can build up your health and strengthen immunity. 

 

Below is my favorite Chicago winter staple spice mix enhancing immunity and supporting digestive fire during the cold season. All ingredients are thoughtfully combined based on their individual qualities and effects according to Ayurvedic wisdom.  Good news is, you might already have these spices in your kitchen. 

 

 

Immunity Winter Spice Mix

 

 

Combine all the powdered spices properly and store in an airtight container in a cool place away from direct sunlight.  I like to use small Mason jars for my special seasonal spice mixtures.  Before adding to the meal, put one teaspoon of the spice mix in one tablespoon of organic ghee in the pan and fry on the low to medium heat while slowly stirring until pleasant aroma is released in the air.  Remove from heat right away to prevent burning.  Add your spiced ghee to cooked rice, quinoa, vegetables, beans, meats or any other dishes before serving.  Alternatively, you can prepare the same mixture using the whole cumin, coriander, fennel and black pepper. Roasting them and then grinding the mixture into a powder. Adding powdered turmeric, ginger and cinnamon.

Note: This spice mixture should be taken daily in the main meal for the optimal benefits.
