Ayurvedic Winter Spiced Water

Winter can easily weight on one's energy and well-being. Days are short and dark, weather is cold, dry, and windy. Vata dosha predominant qualities such as light, cold and dry, that are present everywhere in our environment can affect mental, physical and emotional balance.  

 

Vata dosha out of balance may manifest in the mind and body like the following symptoms to name a few: nervousness, anxiety, tics, tremors, spasms, dry or rough skin, constipation, gas, bloating, interrupted sleep, excessive thinking or worrying.

 

Thankfully, Ayurvedic medicine provides simple yet powerful dietary, lifestyle and herbal remedies to keep Vata dosha at bay. The most essential steps are integrating routine in one's daily lifestyle, staying warm and calm.  Avoiding unnecessary stress.

 

Therefore the recipe for Winter Spiced Water, that I am sharing with you here, comes right on time :)  And you might have most or all ingredients already in your kitchen. 

 

 

Ingredients:

  • Fresh ginger (5 slices)

  • Fresh basil leaves (5 pieces)

  • Lemon (1 wedge) - optional

  • Cinnamon powder (1/2 teaspoon)

  • Cumin (1/3 teaspoon)

 

Method:

Boil ginger, basil, spices and one cup of water in a pot for 5 minutes on a medium heat.  Remove from the heat, strain and serve warm.  Add lemon if you'd like and enjoy. 

 

 

Benefits of Ginger and Basil:

  • Immunity boost (fight inflammations and cold, flu)

  • Stress reliever (mood uplifting)

  • Digestive aid (promotes better digestion, eases stomach cramps and reduces gas)

  • Fresh breath

 

Benefits of Cinnamon and Cumin:

  • They are warming-up Vata dosha while not being too hot

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Both fight cold and flu
